Abraham Thomas reads “strong opinions, weakly held”, long the bio line of Marc Andreessen’s Twitter account, as a technique for decision-making under imperfect information. Commit fully to your current choice (strong opinions) but abandon it quickly when the evidence turns (weakly held). The combination maximizes your rate of learning.
What does “strong opinions, weakly held” mean?
Thomas’s illustration: you are lost in the countryside at nightfall and reach an unmarked fork in the road.
- The worst choice is to stay put: paralysis for lack of information.
- The second-worst is to pick a road and go slowly because you’re unsure. Uncertainty has turned into a lack of commitment.
- Strong opinions: whichever road you pick, go at full speed.
- Weakly held: if the road dwindles to nothing, turn around without stubbornness.
The faster you travel a path, the sooner you learn whether to reverse. Most people fail at both halves: they don’t fully commit, yet they won’t change direction.
When does it work?
Thomas’s two-by-two of certainty and commitment:
| Held strongly | Held weakly | |
|---|---|---|
| Strong opinions | Determinism. Good in well-understood problems. | The optimal strategy for maximizing rate of learning, and the rarest (“the true empty quadrant”), because people dislike admitting ignorance or appearing changeable. |
| Weak opinions | Surprisingly common: static and “safe”; never change your mind, never push hard enough to need to. | The path of least resistance: low-cost, inoffensive, little progress. |
The method applies when information that would reduce uncertainty exists but you don’t have it yet. It is a way to acquire that information as efficiently as possible, which differs from decision-making under pure uncertainty. Thomas describes using variants of it as a hedge-fund trader, as a startup founder, and as an angel investor.
